King of France (reigned 1589-1610). Founder of the Bourbon dynasty. Raised as a Protestant, he played an active role as a leader of the Huguenots. In 1572, he married Marguerite, sister of Charles IX. This triggered the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. He ascended to the throne after Henry III was assassinated. In 1593, he converted to Catholicism. With the support of the emerging bourgeoisie, he worked to pacify the country, and in 1598, he granted religious freedom by royal decree at Nantes, bringing an end to the religious wars (the Huguenot Wars). During his reign, agriculture and industry recovered remarkably, and the foundations of the French absolute monarchy were laid. He was assassinated by the Catholic monk Rabaillac. → Related topics Sully | Daubigné | Marguerite of Navarre | Malherbes | Louis [XIII] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
