1652-1739 (Shoo 1-Genbun 4) A Tendai monk of the early Edo period. His pen name was Reiku, and he was from Chikuzen. He climbed Mt. Hiei at the age of 17, and then lived at Seiko-in in the west tower. In 1678 (Enpo 6), he became a disciple of Myoryuji-san, and in 1689 (Genroku 2), he wrote the "Bekisha-hen" (The Pilgrimage Chapter) in which he rejected the heretical Tendai doctrine of "Genshi-kimyo." In 1693, Prince Rinno-ji no Miya Kouben Hoshinno established Anraku-in in Iimuro-dani on Mt. Hiei as a monastery and appointed it as its abbot. This was the beginning of the Anraku-in school, and the shogunate awarded the temple 100 koku of land. In 1712, he established the foundation ceremony of the dual study of exoteric and esoteric Buddhism, which involves not leaving the gates of the temple and staying in the temple while observing Sha-na-shi-kan. In 1723 (Kyoho 8), he also established Jonyo-in on Mt. Hiei as a monastery, and then started Koun-ritsu-in on Mt. Nikko. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
