... After the death of the Mahdi in 1885, the caliph Abd Allāh bin Muḥammad (c. 1846-1899) took over as leader, but in 1898 the state was destroyed by the British. After that, the sect lost its revolutionary character and gradually shifted to a pro-British stance, but it became the basis of the Umma Party, which opposed unification with Egypt and sought independence for Sudan, and maintained political influence while in conflict with the Mirghani faction (Hatmiyya). A descendant of the Mahdi became the sect's imam and head of the Umma Party, but it was oppressed under the military regime in 1970, and has been without an imam since the imam's assassination in the same year. ...
