Daphne is a nymph in Greek mythology, personified as the laurel tree. She is said to be the daughter of a river god in Arcadia or Thessaly. One day, Apollo made love to her, but she hated this and ran away. When she called for help while being pursued, her father (or Zeus) transformed Daphne, who was about to be captured by Apollo, into a laurel tree. This tree became Apollo's tree. According to a legend in the Peloponnesus, Leucippus, who fell in love with Daphne, disguised himself as a woman to get closer to her and join her on the hunt. However, jealous Apollo made them bathe, and Leucippus' disguise was immediately discovered, and he was killed by Daphne with a hunting spear.
