Baguio (English spelling)

A highland city in Benguet province, western Luzon, Philippines. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,400m in the southwest of the Cordillera Central Mountains, with an average annual temperature of about 18°C. It is 210km north of Manila and connected by a highway. During the American colonial period, it was the summer governor's office, and it rapidly developed as a summer resort, becoming known as the "summer capital." On the gently undulating plateau, surrounded by pine forests, there are rows of luxury hotels and villas. The Philippine Military Academy and St. Louis University are located here. The surrounding area is a gold-producing region, and it is also the commercial center of the region. Population: 183,000 (1990 estimate).
