A general term for servants who served warriors and provincial governors from the Heian period onwards. Other similar terms include "roto" and "jurui", but the term "roju" is often used to include these two. Rōjū were the core servants in a group of warriors, made up of the sons of families (those related by blood) who had a master-vassal relationship with their master, and "banrui" (those with a slightly weaker relationship).
