[Hollow gravity dam]
A dam is made of concrete with an I- or II-shaped horizontal cross section, consisting of an upstream diamond head (a block placed upstream to stop water impoundment, often with an octagonal cross section), a middle buttress, and a downstream till (a concrete wall attached to the downstream end of the buttress to increase earthquake resistance). The dam has an internal cavity, which reduces the uplift pressure acting on the dam bottom, and the upstream face has a gentler slope, giving it a triangular cross section, which uses the weight of the water in the reservoir above it to make up for the weight loss caused by the cavity, ensuring stability against tipping and sliding in the same way as a gravity dam.

　上流側のダイヤモンドヘッド(貯水を止めるため上流側に設けるブロックで，八角形の断面をもつものが多いのでこう呼ぶ)，中間の扶壁，下流側のティル(耐震性を増すため扶壁の下流端に張ったコンクリート壁)が一体となったIまたはII字形の水平断面をもつコンクリートを並べたダム。その内部に空洞があるのでダム底に作用する揚圧力が少なくなるという利点を生かし，さらに上流面のこう配を緩くした三角形の横断面としてその上にのる貯水池の水の重さを利用して空洞によりダムの重量が減った分を補っており，重力ダムと同様にして転倒や滑動に対する安定性を確保している。…
