Classification of ship

A classification given by a classification society to ocean-going ships with a gross registered tonnage of 100 tons or more. Safe navigation is especially important for ships that carry many lives and valuable assets, but in trade, the interests of shipowners, cargo owners, marine insurers, and shipbuilders are greatly involved in the ship, so ocean-going ships may undergo technical inspections by a classification society that is separate from these stakeholders to obtain a class in order to be assured that they are seaworthy in all respects. Classified ships are deemed to meet certain technical standards, and are therefore considered to be seaworthy ships with international appeal, and are given convenience in marine transactions such as ship mortgages, marine insurance, and sales and chartering. To obtain a class, the details of the ship must be submitted to an international classification society before construction begins and approved, construction is carried out under its supervision, and after trials, a class certificate is given to ships that pass. To maintain the class, the ship's hull and machinery must be inspected periodically.

総登簿トン 100t以上の航洋船舶に船級協会から与えられる等級。多数の人命と貴重な財産を積込む船舶には航行の安全性が特に要求されるが，取引上，船をめぐって船主，荷主，海上保険業者，造船業者らの利害が大きくからむので，あらゆる点で航海に適しているという保証を得るために，外航船はこれらの利害関係者から離れた立場にある船級協会の技術的な検査を受け，船級を取得することがある。船級をもつ船は一定の技術的標準を満たすものとして，国際性をもつ船舶の堪航能力を示し，船舶抵当貸付，海上保険付保，売買・傭船などの海運取引に便宜が与えられている。船級を取得するには，建造開始前にその明細を国際船級協会に提出して承諾を得，その監督下に建造が進められ，試運転ののち合格船に船級証書が与えられる。船級を維持するためには船体と機関部の定期的な検査を受ける必要がある。
