1529‐1615 French historian and lawyer. He studied law at universities in France and Italy, mainly from professors who favored the Protestant Reformation, and in 1549 became a lawyer at the Paris High Court, where he established his reputation for arguing in major legal cases. He also had a strong interest in history and literature from an early age, collecting materials, and forming friendships with poets and writers such as Ronsard, and experimenting with poetry and prose works himself. As a lawyer during the period of the Wars of Religion, he maintained a Catholic faith, but also took a broad view and preached religious freedom and called for peace and tolerance.
