When cast iron with a relatively low silicon content is cooled from the molten state at a relatively fast rate, a eutectic reaction occurs: liquid phase - austenite + cementite (Fe ₃ C). The structure obtained at this time is called ledeburite. A composition in which a eutectic reaction occurs directly from the liquid phase is called a eutectic composition, but in cast iron with a composition closer to the iron side than the eutectic composition (hypoeutectic composition), austenite (primary austenite) is formed during cooling, and then the eutectic reaction occurs. When cooled further, the primary austenite and the austenite in the ledeburite eutectic reach the eutectoid temperature while precipitating cementite, forming pearlite.

ケイ素の量がやや少ない鋳鉄を溶融状態から比較的速い速度で冷却していくと，〈液相―→オーステナイト＋セメンタイト(Fe₃C)〉の共晶反応が起こる。このとき得られる組織をレーデブライトという。液相から直接共晶反応が起こる組成を共晶組成というが，共晶組成より鉄側の組成(亜共晶組成)をもつ鋳鉄では冷却中まずオーステナイト(初晶オーステナイト)が生じ，その後に共晶反応が起こる。さらに冷却すると初晶オーステナイトおよびレーデブライト共晶中のオーステナイトはセメンタイトを析出しながら共析温度に達し，パーライトを生成する。
