Greek painter. Born in Heracleia in Asia Minor, he was active in Athens. He is said to have been a student of Apollodorus (active around 430-400 BC), also known as Sciagraphos (Shade Painter). He became the most famous painter of his time by using thorough realistic techniques. According to Pliny the Elder, one day a small bird came to peck at a bunch of grapes he had painted, mistaking it for the real thing. Ancient documents also say that he painted Helen the Beautiful, a figure that brings together the most beautiful parts of five beautiful women, and Zeus seated on a throne with the gods at his side.

ギリシアの画家。小アジアのヘラクレイアに生まれ，アテナイで活躍。スキアグラフォス(陰影画家)とも呼ばれたアポロドロスApollodōros(前430‐前400ころ活躍)の門下と伝えられる。徹底した写実の技法を用いることにより当代の最も著名な画家となった。大プリニウスによれば，あるとき，彼が描いたブドウの房を小鳥が実物とまちがえてついばみに来た，という。古代の文献は，彼はこのほか5人の美女の最も美しい部分を集めた美女ヘレネ，神々を従えて王座に座すゼウスなどを描いたと伝える。
