From Turkmenistan

[history]
Turkmenistan was subject to constant civil wars and Iranian invasions, and individual ethnic groups sometimes sought protection from the Russian government, but the turning point for Russian expansion came in 1869, when Russian troops led by NG Stoletov landed on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea and established the foundations of Krasnovodsk. In 1881, Ashgabat (now Ashgabat) fell into Russian hands, and in 1882 it became part of the Transcaspian Oblast within the Caucasus Governorate. From 1990 to 1997 it came under the direct control of the Minister of War, and then became part of the Turkestan Governorate.
