Died: December 12, 1681. Helmstedt was a German scholar. His work De origine juris germanici (1643) opened up the field of Germanic law to legal studies, which were limited to Roman law at the time, and he is called the founder of German legal history. In medicine, he contributed to the popularization of Harvey's theory of blood circulation. In politics, he is considered a pioneer of statistics with his Examenrerum politicarum potiorum totius orbis (62). In economics, he wrote De importandis et exportandis (65) and De commerciis (66), which take a mercantilist stance.
