A full-length novel by Ooka Shohei. Starting with the short story "Prisoner's Record" (retitled "Until Captured"), which was published in Bungakukai in 1948, the novel was published in various magazines until 1951. In 1952, the omnibus edition "Prisoner's Record" was published by Sogensha. The author was attacked by American forces on Mindoro Island in the Philippines in January 1945, and was left alone in the mountains as a sick soldier. He lost consciousness and was taken prisoner, spending about a year in a camp. This omnibus edition "Prisoner's Record" is a record of his experiences. It provides a rigorous examination of the author's own actions and consciousness as a soldier and a prisoner of war, while also vividly depicting the ecology and humanity of the prisoners of war, and portraying life in the camp in a way that suggests Japanese society under occupation.

大岡昇平の長編小説。1948年《文学界》に発表された短編《俘虜記》(合本《俘虜記》収録時に〈捉まるまで〉と改題)をはじめとして，51年まで各誌に分載。52年創元社より合本《俘虜記》として刊行。作者は，45年1月フィリピンのミンドロ島でアメリカ軍の攻撃を受け，病兵としてひとり山中に取り残され，意識を失って捕虜となり，約1年間収容所生活を送った。この合本《俘虜記》はその体験の記録である。兵士および俘虜としての自己の行動と意識について厳密な考察が加えられると同時に，俘虜たちの生態と人間性とが活写され，収容所の生活が占領下の日本の社会を暗示するように描き出されている。
