…A map is a representation of a part or the whole of the Earth's surface, drawn on a flat surface. In English, a map of land is called a map, a map of the sea or lake a chart, and a large-scale map (drawing) of a small area a plan, but in Japan the term map is commonly used. However, the term map has only been used since the early Meiji period, and in the Edo period it was called an edu. In addition to the Earth's surface, there are also lunar maps that depict the surface of the moon, globes that model the Earth as a sphere, relief maps that slightly exaggerate the Earth's unevenness to create a three-dimensional view, and bird's-eye views that depict the Earth's surface from diagonally above, which can also be considered applications or variations of maps in a broad sense. …
