This city occupies the Tsukushi Plain on the left bank of the Chikugo River near the mouth of the river in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It developed around Wakatsu, which was an important port for water transportation on the Chikugo River and the Ariake Sea route. Since the end of the Edo period, the city has been a thriving producer of furniture and fittings using high-quality timber from the upper reaches of the Chikugo River, with sales channels spanning all of western Japan. Rice, rush grass, and strawberries are also produced in abundance. Nori seaweed farming is thriving along the Ariake Sea coast. It is home to Koga Masao's birthplace and memorial hall. 33.62 km2 . 福岡県南部,筑後川河口に近い左岸の筑紫(つくし)平野部を占める市。1954年市制。筑後川水運と有明海航路の要港であった若津を中心に発達。江戸末期から筑後川上流の良材による家具・建具製造が盛んで,販路は西日本一帯に及ぶ。米,イグサ,イチゴも多産。有明海沿岸でのノリ養殖が盛ん。古賀政男の生家と記念館がある。33.62km2。3万7448人(2010)。
