Year of death: March 23, 1644 (April 29, 1644) Year of birth: Tensho 11 (1583) Lord of Ise Kameyama, Settsu Osaka, Yamato Koriyama, and Harima Himeji domains in the early Edo period. Born in Shinshiro, Shitara County, Mikawa (Shinshiro City, Aichi Prefecture) as the fourth son of Okudaira Nobumasa, a subordinate general of the Tokugawa clan. His mother was Ieyasu's eldest daughter, Kamehime. He was adopted by his maternal grandfather Ieyasu and took the surname Matsudaira. He participated in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (Keicho 5), and in 1615 was given a fief of 17,000 koku in Mikawa Sakute, and in 1616 was given a fief of 50,000 koku in Kameyama. He was active in both the winter and summer campaigns of Osaka. Immediately after the summer campaign of 1615 (Genna 1), he was given a fief of 100,000 koku in Osaka, built a new castle there, and restored and developed the city of Osaka, laying the foundations for what would later become "the kitchen of the world." In 1632, after the death of the Shogun Hidetada, Iemitsu took control of the real power of the shogunate government. Together with Ii Naotaka, the lord of Hikone domain, he oversaw the fudai daimyo, while at the same time participating in the shogunate government as the senior councilor on behalf of the fudai daimyo, helping to establish Iemitsu's administration. In 1633, when the isolation policy was completed and external relations were tense, he was transferred to Himeji with a fief of 180,000 koku, and was ordered to take overall command of the daimyo of the western provinces in the event of an attack by a foreign enemy, and he sent his retainers to Nagasaki. He also worked hard to develop his domain. A skilled warrior, he worked to improve military equipment, and helped to establish the shogunate government as a leading fudai daimyo in the early modern period. <References> "History of Osaka Prefecture" 3 volumes, Yamamoto Hirofumi "The Establishment of the Shogunate-Han System and the National System in the Early Modern Period" (Negishi Shigeo) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
