German King of the Salian dynasty (reigned 1056-1105), Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1084-1105). Son of Henry III. First his mother Agnes, then Bishop Adalbert of Bremen, served as regent, and from 1065 he ruled directly. In the Investiture Controversy with Pope Gregory VII, he overcame the crisis with the humiliation of Canossa in 1077, and later expelled the Pope from Rome. In 1103, he issued the first Imperial Peace Decree.

ザリエル朝ドイツ国王（在位1056年―1105年），神聖ローマ皇帝（在位1084年―1105年）。ハインリヒ３世の子。初め母アグネス，次いでブレーメン司教アダルベルトが摂政となり，1065年から親政。教皇グレゴリウス７世との叙任権闘争では1077年カノッサの屈辱で危機を打開し，のち教皇をローマから追放した。1103年最初の帝国平和令を発布。
