In Greek mythology, she is a sea nymph and the daughter of Nereus. Her name "Milky Woman" is said to be derived from the milky foam of the sea and the milk (gala) of the livestock that is her guardian. Polyphemus of the Cyclopes wooed her, but she rejected him, as she already had Acis as her lover. Polyphemus then grabbed a rock from Mount Etna and threw it at Acis, killing him, but she transformed him into a river. There is also an alternative version that says she and Polyphemus married.
