Shahpur II

Shahpur II
?‐379
The tenth king of the Sassanid Empire. Reigned 309-379. Son of Hormizd II. He ascended to the throne at a young age, and initially his mother was in charge of politics with the cooperation of the great nobles. After pacifying the Arabs who had been raiding the borders, he aimed to recover the western provinces that had been seized by Rome during the reign of Narseh (298). He first took advantage of the internal conflict in Armenia to occupy the country. This led to a long war with Rome in 337. At the time, Rome protected Christianity, and the Armenian king also pursued a proselytism policy, so in response, Shapur II began persecuting Christians in 339.
