A metal foundry craftsman. In ancient times, metal foundries belonged to the Ministry of Finance or temple foundries, but later traveled widely around the country and engaged in trade. Meanwhile, some foundries strengthened their ties with the shogunate and shugo (provincial governors), and emigrated to the eastern provinces, where they were provided with land and other supplies to meet the needs of feudal lords. In the late Middle Ages, areas specializing in metal casting were established all over the country, with famous areas being Tannan in Kawachi, Ashiya in Chikuzen, and Tenmyo in Shimotsuke. During the Sengoku period, the organization of metal foundries was revived through the efforts of the Makitsugi family, and in the early modern period, they formed stock associations and strengthened their monopoly. It is said that a foundry worker in Kawaguchi, Saitama, cast a bronze cannon before the Meiji Restoration. → Related topics Tinkerer | Enoki | Blacksmith | Kyo-kettle | Tenmei-kettle | Bell festival | People on the road Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
