Brittle coating

Japanese: 応力塗料 - おうりょくとりょう（英語表記）brittle coating

Also called strain paint. A special paint with very brittle properties for the purpose of stress analysis of objects. Academically, it is called brittle paint. A paint film is applied to the surface of an object, and the stress state can be determined from the crack pattern that occurs in the paint film when a load is applied. Cracks occur perpendicular to the principal tensile stress on the object surface, and there is a correspondence between the crack interval and the stress value. As long as the paint can be applied, it can be applied regardless of the material, shape, or size, and high stress areas will not be overlooked, and the main direction and overall stress state can be grasped with the naked eye. However, it is easily affected by the paint film thickness, temperature, humidity, etc., and is not as accurate as a strain gauge. In general, it is not easy to measure at temperatures above room temperature.

ひずみ塗料ともいう。物体の応力解析を目的とした非常にもろい性質の特殊な塗料。学術的には脆性塗料という。物体の表面に塗料膜を塗布しておき，負荷されたときに生じる塗料膜の亀裂模様から応力の状態を知るもので，物体表面の引張り主応力に対して垂直に亀裂が生じ，亀裂間隔と応力値間にも対応性がある。塗装さえ可能ならば，材料，形状，寸法にかかわりなく適用でき，高い応力領域を見落さず，主方向と全体の応力状態を肉眼で把握できるが，塗膜厚さや温度，湿度などに影響されやすく，ひずみ計ほどには精度がよくない。一般に室温以上の温度での測定は容易でない。
