Brazilian businessman and member of the House of Representatives. A pioneer in the formation of the modern economy. Born into a poor family in the south, he moved to the capital, Rio de Janeiro, at the age of 11 to work as a shop assistant. He began working for a British merchant around 1830, and in 1840 traveled to England on business to broaden his horizons. After returning to Brazil in 1845, he became independent and embarked on bold business ventures. In 1846, he established South America's first full-scale shipyard in Rio de Janeiro, laying the foundations for strengthening the imperial navy and developing commercial transport, and in 1852 he founded the Amazon River Steamship Company.

ブラジルの実業家，下院議員。近代経済形成の先駆者。南部地方の貧家に生まれ，11歳のとき首都リオ･デ･ジャネイロに出て店員となった。1830年ごろイギリス商人のもとで働き始め，40年には商用でイギリスに渡り見識を広めた。帰国後の45年以降は独立して大胆な事業活動に乗り出した。46年に南アメリカ最初の本格的造船所をリオ･デ･ジャネイロに創設して帝国海軍力の増強と商業運輸の発達の基礎を築き，52年にはアマゾン川汽船会社を設立した。
