[Died] August 9, 2003. Los Angeles, California. Dancer, actor, and choreographer. Full name: Gregory Oliver Hines. Known as one of the best tap dancers of his time, he also worked as a choreographer. He began formal dance training at the age of three, and formed The Hines Kids with his brother Maurice at the age of five. At the age of eight, the brothers made their Broadway debut. They then performed as The Hines Brothers, and appeared on popular television shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show while touring the country. In 1973, he moved to California alone to form a rock band, but returned to New York in 1978 and performed in various productions. He also appeared in films such as The Cotton Club (1984), White Nights (1985), and Tap (1988). He won an Emmy Award in 1989, and in 1992 returned to Broadway in Jelly's Last Jam, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Actor and was also nominated for Best Choreography. (→Tap Dance)

[Died] April 22, 1983, Oakland, American jazz pianist. He played the trumpet as a boy, then switched to the piano, and joined the Louis Armstrong Orchestra in 1927. In the 1930s he formed his own orchestra and was active in Chicago. His popularity declined after that, but he made a comeback in the mid-1960s and became popular again.
