Koura ruins

Japanese: 古浦遺跡 - こうらいせき

Located in Furuura, Kashima-cho, Yatsuka-gun, Shimane Prefecture, this site dates from the Yayoi to Kofun periods. Several excavations were conducted between 1956 and 1964. The site is located on a coastal sand dune facing Etomo Bay and consists of four layers. In the fourth layer, the lowest layer, a mass grave from the early Yayoi period was discovered, and approximately 50 buried human bones were excavated. Most of the bones are in a supine position with their limbs flexed. In some cases, gravel was placed around the remains, pottery was buried with them, and boulders were scattered on the ground after burial. Adult bones universally bear traces of tooth extraction, and three of the male skulls have blue-green spots on the forehead.

島根県八束郡鹿島町古浦に所在する，弥生時代から古墳時代にかけての遺跡。1956‐64年に数次の発掘調査が行われた。遺跡は恵曇（えとも）湾に面した海岸砂丘上に位置し，4層よりなる。最下層の第4層では，弥生時代前期の集団墓地が見いだされ，約50体の埋葬人骨が発掘された。その多くは仰臥屈肢の姿勢をとる。遺骸の周囲に礫を配置した例，土器を副葬した例，埋葬後の地表に玉石を散布した例などもある。成人骨は普遍的に抜歯痕跡をとどめ，そのうち男性頭骨の3例は，額に青緑色の斑痕を遺している。
