A Chinese gate-type building with no doors and open structure. In Japan, it is also read as "hairou" and called "haihou". It has 3-5 bays in a row of pillars and a small stepped roof on top, but it has no depth and stands alone. In addition to wood, many are made of stone, and some are ornately decorated with carvings and colors. Many are built in front of palaces, tombs, Confucius temples, Taoist temples, Buddhist temples, and Lama temples, and the Wu-Tou Gate and the Lu-Xing Gate are also types of this type. Some were also built on the streets, as in the old Beijing city wall. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
