Brass band

Japanese: ブラス･バンド（英語表記）brass band

The English word brass means "brass band" (sometimes including percussion instruments). In Japan, the word "brass band" is often used to mean "wind orchestra" (also called "wind ensemble"), but this is a misnomer. The standard composition of a brass band does not include woodwinds, nor does it include trumpets or French horns, but is centered around brass instruments from the saxhorn family, as well as cornets and trombones. In other words, a brass band consists of 27 players: 10 cornets (including soprano), 1 flugelhorn, 3 alto horns, 2 baritone horns, 2 euphoniums, 3 trombones, 2 E♭ basses, 2 B♭ basses, and 2 percussion instruments, but there are various sizes and compositions.

英語のブラスはシンチュウのことで，〈金管バンド〉(打楽器を含む場合もある)をいう。〈ブラ･バン〉の略称とともに，日本ではしばしば〈吹奏楽団〉の意味に用いられるが，これは誤用である。ブラス･バンドの標準編成は木管を含まないだけでなく，トランペットやフレンチ･ホルンも含まず，サクソルン属と呼ばれる金管楽器を中心に，コルネットとトロンボーンで編成されている。すなわち，コルネット(ソプラノを含む)10，フリューゲル･ホルン1，アルト･ホルン3，バリトン･ホルン2，ユーフォニウム2，トロンボーン3,E♭バス2,B♭バス2，打楽器2の27名からなるが，大･小各種の編成がある。
