Hiradate Strait - Hiradate Strait

Japanese: 平舘海峡 - たいらだてかいきょう

A strait in northern Aomori Prefecture between the Tsugaru Peninsula and the Shimokita Peninsula. It connects two sea areas, the Tsugaru Strait in the north and Mutsu Bay in the south. With an average width of about 11 km, it is an important sea route connecting Hakodate City in Hokkaido and Aomori City in Aomori Prefecture by ferry. On both sides of the strait, the mountains approach the sea and form steep cliffs. At Myojinzaki on the Tsugaru Peninsula side, there is the Hiradate Lighthouse, which was erected in 1869.

青森県北部，津軽半島と下北半島の間にある海峡。北の津軽海峡と南の陸奥湾の二つの海域をつなぐ。平均幅約 11kmで，北海道の函館市と青森県青森市をフェリーで結ぶ重要な海上交通路となっている。海峡の両側は，山地が海に迫り急崖をなす。津軽半島側の明神崎には明治2（1869）年に設置された平舘灯台がある。
