This is a type of paroxysmal mental confusion once seen in Ainu women; for example, hearing the word "tokkoni (viper)" or seeing a toy snake would cause a woman to become extremely excited, only to return to normal after a while. Psychiatrically, it is accompanied by increased suggestibility, command automatism, echolalia, echoic movements, sexual speech, anguish, anxiety, etc., but similar transient mental disorders are also seen in other peoples besides the Ainu, such as the Rata of Malay and Indonesia, and according to Uchimura Yuji, the true nature of both is the same primitive hysterical reaction.

アイヌの女性にかつてみられた発作性の精神錯乱で，たとえば〈トッコニ(マムシ)〉という語を耳にしたり，蛇の玩具を見ると，激しい興奮状態におちいり，しばらくしてまた元にもどる。精神医学的には，被暗示性の亢進，命令自動，反響言語，反響動作，性的言動，苦悶，不安などが付随するが，これと似た一過性の精神異常はアイヌ以外にもたとえばマレー･インドネシアのラターにみられ，内村祐之によると，両者の本態はおなじ原始ヒステリー反応にほかならない。
