This chamber ensemble was formed in 1952 by musicians who graduated from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome. Their performances are filled with bright tones and fresh expressions, and their performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons in particular led to a reevaluation of Vivaldi and was a pioneer of today's trends in Baroque music. The orchestra does not have a conductor, but instead focuses on a concertmaster, the first of whom was Felix Ayo (1933- ) from Spain, who devoted himself to developing the orchestra until his retirement in 1968. Although their repertoire is mainly Baroque music, they also perform classical pieces such as those by Mozart. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
