Daudet, Alphonse

Daudet, Alphonse
Born: May 13, 1840. Gall, Nimes
[Died] December 16, 1897. Paris French novelist. Born into a wealthy family, he gave up university due to bankruptcy and aspired to become a writer. In 1857, he went to Paris, where he became a student and friend of E. Goncourt. He pursued objectivity by closely observing the subtleties of things and life with the clarity typical of a southern Frenchman, recording them in his notebook and using them in his works. At the same time, he was filled with deep love for human beings, and even when he criticized and sarcastically portrayed human stupidity and ugliness, he wove in pity and sympathized with the inevitable weakness and imperfection of human beings. His writing style was concise, clear, and elegant. His major works include the short story collection Lettres de mon moulin (1869), the novel Tartarin de Tarascon (72), Les Contes du lundi (Monday Tales) (73), Jack (76), Sapho (84), and the play L'Arlésienne (72), known for a song by Bizet.
