They are an indigenous people living in the Khabarovsk region of the Russian Far East, calling themselves the Nani. Population: 3,200 (1989). They live in the lower reaches of the Amur River, bordering the Nivkh people (formerly known as Gilyak) in the north, and living in mixed villages with the Nanai people (formerly known as Gorid) in the south. They also once traveled to southern Sakhalin, and in places they mixed with the Ainu and Nivkh people, leaving traces of assimilation. They speak Ulich, a language closely related to the Nanai language, which belongs to the Tungusic-Manchu language family, and generally share a common culture with other peoples in the Amur River basin who speak languages of this family.
