First World

(1911-57) was born in Yokohama. From the age of five, she studied under the founder Kishu of the Nishikawa School of Shoha, and in 1928 (Showa 3) she took the name Nishikawa Kiyomi. In 1930, she formed the Wakaba-kai and devoted herself to new dance, giving up her surname Nishikawa. In 1938, she became independent under her real name, Nishizaki Midori, and in 1948 (Showa 23), at the request of her students, she established the Nishizaki School and became its head. She performed folk dance, folk song dance, the opera-style dance drama Dojoji, and the masterpieces Koujin and Nichirin. She was also a member of NHK's Tonchi Kyoushitsu, and gained widespread popularity, but passed away in her forties. Her books include Buyo no Akekure (The Dawn and the Past) (1953) and Youte Soro (The Drunken Soro) (1957).

(1931-) A disciple of the founder, Nishizaki Kazumi (real name Shirakawa Kazuko), took over the name in 1960. However, she is not the head of the school. In addition to the folk dance and folk song dance inherited from the founder, she has created excellent works with religious themes, and her representative works include the outdoor performance trilogy "Yaobikuni," "Kayajo Tensho," and "Sayohime Zoushi."

初世

(1911―57)横浜に生まれる。5歳から正派西川流の初世喜洲(きしゅう)に師事、1928年(昭和3)西川喜代美を名のる。30年、若葉会を結成して新舞踊に打ち込み、西川姓を返上。38年、本名の西崎緑として独立し、48年(昭和23)に門下の要請で西崎流を樹立し家元となった。民俗舞踊、民謡舞踊、オペラ風の舞踊劇『道成寺(どうじょうじ)』や、大作『黄塵(こうじん)』『日輪(にちりん)』などを発表するかたわら、NHKの「とんち教室」の一員として活躍し、幅広い人気を集めたが、40代の盛りで没した。著書に『舞踊のあけくれ』(1953)、『酔うて候』(1957)がある。

2世

(1931― )初世の弟子、西崎和美(本名白川和子)が60年に襲名した。ただし、家元ではない。初世ゆずりの民俗舞踊、民謡舞踊はもとより、宗教的な世界に題材をとった佳作を生み、代表作品に野外公演における三部作『八百比丘尼(やおびくに)』『加耶女転生(かやじょてんしょう)』『小夜姫草紙(さよひめぞうし)』がある。
