Shuzo Takiguchi

Japanese: 滝口修造 - たきぐちしゅうぞう
Shuzo Takiguchi
Poet and art critic. Born in Toyama Prefecture. Studied under Junzaburo Nishiwaki at Keio University. In 1930, he translated Breton's Surrealism and Painting, introducing surrealism to Japan in earnest. His 1940 publication of Miro was the world's first monograph on the painter, and he later co-authored Under the Stars of Miro (1978) and other works. He worked as a theorist of avant-garde art, but was arrested in 1941 for being a Communist sympathizer. From 1950, he wrote art reviews for the Yomiuri Shimbun, and the following year he was in charge of planning at the Takemiya Gallery. In the same year, he participated in the formation of the artistic group Experimental Workshop, which was led by Toru Takemitsu and Katsuhiro Yamaguchi, and became a theoretical pillar of avant-garde art after the war. In 1958, he traveled to Europe, where he met Breton and others. From the 1960s onwards, while he produced artworks such as decalcomanies, he stopped contributing to newspapers and magazines and wrote only for private addresses. His works include the poetry collections "Distance of Fairies" (1937), "Modern Art" (1938), "Fantastic Painters' Theory" (1959), the essay collections "Point" (1963), "Shuzo Takiguchi's Poetic Experiments 1927-1937" (1967), and "Quotes of Marcel Duchamp" (1968).
