A general term for books published mainly by the Gozan Zen temples in Kyoto and Kamakura from the end of the Kamakura period (first half of the 14th century) to the end of the Muromachi period (second half of the 16th century). The contents are mainly Buddhist scriptures, mainly Zen books, but also include Chinese sutras, history books, and apocrypha such as collections of poems and prose by Du Fu and other apocrypha, which are necessary for the education of Zen monks. There were 300-odd Zen books and 100 Chinese books, totaling 400-odd books. It is said that there are about 1,500 copies of the Gozan edition still in existence (according to Kawase Kazuma's "Research on the Gozan Edition"). One of the distinctive features of the Gozan edition is that, unlike the Kasuga edition and Koya edition, many of them are reprints of Song, Yuan, and Ming editions from China, or Korean editions, that is, what we would call cover copies today. Another distinctive feature is that, because the publication was carried out by master craftsmen from China, such as Yu Liangfu and Chen Mengrong, the influence of Chinese printing techniques can be clearly seen in the printing and binding styles, such as the engraving of outlines, borders, and centering of the pages, which later became the basis for the style of Japanese block books.
