…The characters used in the group of several dozen short inscriptions known as the Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions, discovered in the winter of 1904-05 at the ancient mine site of Serabiit el-Khadem on the Sinai Peninsula. In a paper published in 1916, British Egyptologist AH Gardiner suggested that the characters were a monophonic script intermediate between Egyptian hieroglyphics and Northwest Semitic script (the so-called Phoenician alphabet), because they were linear characters similar to Egyptian hieroglyphics. He published the results of his partial decipherment.
