Also known as biological assay. This is a method for quantifying physiologically active substances using their activity on living organisms as an indicator. A typical example is the bioassay of amino acids, vitamins, etc., using microorganisms. Bacteria that require amino acids or vitamins as essential growth factors, such as lactic acid bacteria and some types of yeast, grow in a manner roughly proportional to the amount of these substances added when the substances are added to the medium at or below the saturation concentration. Therefore, if the relationship between the substance concentration and the amount of growth is obtained in advance as a standard curve, the amount of the substance can be determined inversely from the amount of growth. 生物学的定量法ともいう。生理活性物質の定量をその生物に対する活性を指標として行う方法で,代表的なものは微生物を利用するアミノ酸,ビタミンなどのバイオアッセーである。乳酸菌やある種の酵母などアミノ酸やビタミンを必須生育因子として要求する菌は,培地に飽和濃度以下のこれらの物質を添加した場合,その添加量にほぼ比例した生育を示すので,あらかじめ物質濃度と生育量の関係を標準曲線として求めておけば,生育量から逆に物質量を決定することができる。
