A reptile of the gekkonidae family. Also known as the giant gecko. Length 25-35cm. Widely distributed in southern and southeastern Asia. Gray-brown in color, with countless irregular spots scattered throughout. The name comes from the cry that sounds like "tokei." It is a common sight in Asian cities at night, clinging to walls and crying. Each row of scales on the underside of the toes is made up of more than 150,000 protrusions called "setae," allowing it to climb vertical glass surfaces. It is nocturnal and preys on insects and small animals. It is a natural enemy of malaria-carrying mosquitoes, so it is treated with care in the local area, and the number of cries it makes is used to tell fortunes. In recent years, it has been introduced to Japan as a pet. If you want to hear its cries in captivity, you must use a large cage.
