Roe deer - Roe deer
A mammal of the Cervidae family in the order Artiodactyla (illustration). Also known as the roe deer. A small deer with small, three-pointed antlers about 20 cm long. It is widely distributed across Eurasia, excluding India, from Europe to northern China and the Korean Peninsula, but does not live in Japan. Its body color is usually reddish brown in summer and gray-brown or clay-colored in winter, but it is quite variable, with some being almost white or black. It is 110 cm long, 70 cm tall at the shoulder, and weighs around 30 kg. It has almost no tail, and the combination of its black nose and white chin is striking.

偶蹄目シカ科の哺乳類(イラスト)。別名ノロジカ。長さ20cm程度の3尖(せん)の小さな角をもつ小型のシカ。ヨーロッパから中国北部,朝鮮半島にかけてのインドを除くユーラシア大陸に広く分布するが,日本にはすまない。体色は,ふつう夏毛は赤褐色,冬毛は灰褐色,または粘土色だが,変化に富み,ほとんど白色のものや黒色のものもある。体長110cm,肩高70cm,体重30kg前後。尾をほとんど欠き,黒い鼻と白い下あごの先の配色のとりあわせが目だつ。
