Coppée, François

Coppée, François
Born: January 26, 1842, Paris
[Died] May 23, 1908. Paris. French poet and playwright. Born into a poor family, he worked at the Ministry of War, the Senate Library, and the Théâtre de France. He was involved with highbrow poets from an early age, and published his first collection of poems, Le Reliquaire, in 1866. His verse drama Le Passant (1869), faithful to the Romantic tradition, was performed starring Sarah Bernhardt, and gained him fame. After that, he published a series of poems and plays that depicted the lives and feelings of ordinary people in a simple manner, and his somewhat old-fashioned and sentimental style made him very popular. His representative work is the collection of poems Les Humbles (72). Other works include Récits et élégies (78) and the verse drama Pour la couronne (95). Member of the Academie Française (84).
