Marine hatchetfish

Japanese: ムネエソ（英語表記）marine hatchetfish

A deep-sea fish of the family Leptidae in the order Pycnonotidae. Its body is laterally compressed, extremely tall, and nearly diamond-shaped. Its mouth is small and oblique, and almost the same diameter as its eyes. There are groups of light-emitting organs bordered with black pigment on the ventral surface and sides of the body. The light-emitting organs are long and all face downward. The dorsal fin is located behind the center of the body, and just before it is a transparent dorsal plate with serrated edges. The anal fin continues from slightly forward of the center of the body to just before the caudal fin, and the base of the front half of the fin is transparent. Its teeth are tiny, and it mainly feeds on small crustaceans.

ワニトカゲギス目ムネエソ科の深海魚。体は側扁し，体高が著しく高くひし形に近い。口は斜めで小さく眼径にほぼ等しい。腹面や体側に黒色素で縁取られた発光器群がある。発光器は縦長ですべて下方を向いている。背びれは体の中心より後にあり，その直前に透明で鋸歯状の縁をもつ背板がある。しりびれは体の中心のやや前方より尾びれ直前まで続き，その前半部の付け根部分は透明となっている。歯は微小で，おもに小型甲殻類を食べる。
