1727‐71 (Kyoho 12‐Meiwa 8) A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. His surname was Kuroyanagi, and he was commonly known as Seibei. His other names included Gentei and Shundeisha. He was from Kyoto. He first went to Edo to study Chinese poetry under Hattori Nankaku, where he met fellow student Buson and became interested in haiku. He later returned to Kyoto to study Chinese poetry and prose under Ryuso-ro, and became known to the world as the Chinese poet Ryuko. At the time, he was familiar with haiku as a hobby, but when Buson formed the Sankasha in 1766 (Meiwa 3), he joined, and there he became passionate about haiku and distinguished himself. He admired the writing styles of Kyorai, Ransetsu, Kikaku, and Sodo, rejected the vulgar styles of Shiko and Bakurin (Otsuyu), and was fascinated by Buson, and was happy to live a life apart from the secular world.
