A state on the Pacific coast of the United States. Abbreviated as Oreg., OR. It has many mountainous and hilly areas, and the Columbia River runs along the northern state border. It has a west coast oceanic climate. Forestry and related industries (lumber, paper, pulp, furniture manufacturing) are extremely popular. The main agricultural products are apples, wheat, pears, and potatoes. The fishing industry (salmon) is also thriving. There are many tourist destinations, including Crater Lake National Park. Many pioneers immigrated to the state via the Oregon Trail after 1843. After joint ownership by Britain and the United States, it became a U.S. territory in 1846. It joined the Union in 1859.
