A non-venomous snake of the Colubridae family of the reptile class (illustration) that is well known throughout Japan. It is 1-1.5m long, and large specimens measuring 1.9-2m have been collected from Tadanae Island in the Izu Seven Islands. It is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and various remote islands. The back of the body has four dark brown stripes running from the neck to the tail. Young snakes have dark brown horizontal stripes that fade as they grow, and the vertical stripes become more prominent. It resembles the Japanese Rat Snake, but can be distinguished by its red iris and 19 rows of body scales around its torso. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
