Ogano Tamaro

Ogano Tamaro
?-? A Shinto priest in the Nara period.
He was the chief priest of Usa Hachiman Shrine in Buzen (Oita Prefecture). In 749, he was given the surname of Ason along with Ogami Morime, and was given the rank of Jugo Fifth Rank after the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple was completed as predicted by the oracle of Usa Hachiman. In 750, Morime was exiled to Tanenoshima (Tanegashima) for practicing sorcery with the Yakushiji monk Gyoshin, but was pardoned in 760 and became an Ingenojo in Bungo.

豊前(ぶぜん)宇佐八幡宮(大分県)の主神司。天平勝宝(てんぴょうしょうほう)元年(749)大神杜女(もりめ)とともに朝臣の姓(かばね)をあたえられ,宇佐八幡神の託宣どおり東大寺大仏が完成したとして外従五位下をさずかる。6年杜女,薬師寺の僧行信と妖術をおこなったとして多褹島(たねのしま)(種子島)に流されるが,天平神護(てんぴょうじんご)2年ゆるされ豊後(ぶんご)の員外掾(いんげのじょう)となった。
