Mr. Takashi Sasaki

Japanese:
Mr. Takashi Sasaki

A military commander during the Nanboku-cho period. Son of the Mune clan. Adopted son of Sadamune. A member of the Kyogoku clan. Called Doyo. He served the regent Hojo Takatoki under the Kamakura shogunate, and became a kebiishi (police officer) and Sado no Kami (provincial governor). After the Genkō Incident (1331), he escorted Emperor Godaigo to Oki by order of the shogunate. However, in 1333 (Gankō 3, Shōkei 2), he joined the vassals of Ashikaga Takauji. In 1334 (Kenmu 1), he became a member of the Zassoketsu Dansho Yoryuudo (a court of appeals office). The following year, during the Hojo Tokiyuki Rebellion (Nakasendai Rebellion), he accompanied Takauji eastward, but eventually surrendered to the Nitta Yoshisada's punitive forces when they encountered them, and then accompanied Takauji again at the Battle of Hakone Bamboo Grotto. He eventually supported Takauji by subjugating Omi, and after Takauji established the shogunate in 36 (Engen 1, Kenmu 3), he became the shugo (military governor) of Omi, Wakasa, Izumo, Hida, Kazusa, and other areas, and became a force that supported the shogunate. However, he was also a typical example of a so-called "basara daimyo" who ignored established authority, and in 40 (Ryakuo 3, Kokoku 1), he was exiled for burning the palace of the Tendai Zasu Myohoin no Miyari Ryosho, but was soon reinstated. He assisted Takauji during the Kanno Disturbance from 1605 (Shohei 5, Kanno 1) to the following year, and after Takauji retreated to Kamakura, he lent his support to Yoshiakira, who was defending Kyoto. In 1667 (Shohei 22, Sadaharu 6), he participated in peace negotiations with the Southern Court, but they ended in failure. Despite his free-spirited personality, he also had talents in linked verse, Tachibana, and the tea ceremony, and was also a military commander who appreciated the arts of elegance. He died on August 25, 1673 (Bunchu 2, Oan 6).
