Melastoma - Peony

Japanese: ノボタン - のぼたん
Melastoma - Peony

An evergreen shrub of the Melastomataceae family (APG classification: Melastomataceae). It is found from the Ogasawara Islands, Amami Oshima and south to Vietnam. It is about 2 meters tall. The young branches are square and covered with grayish-white soft hairs. The leaves are opposite and elliptical, 5-10 cm long, pointed at the tip, and have 3-5 parallel veins. In summer, cymes are borne at the ends of the branches, and 3-7 pale purple flowers, each about 7 cm in diameter, bloom. There are five petals arranged in a whorl. There are 10 stamens, of which two are large, purple, 1 cm long, sickle-shaped, and the remaining eight are slightly smaller and yellow. It is cultivated in a greenhouse as a potted plant. The fruit is a jar-shaped berry that can be eaten. The Lithospermum japonica, which is very similar to this species, blooms from autumn to the following spring, and has long, sickle-shaped, purple anthers. It is native to Central and South America and is sold as a horticultural plant.
