Fries, Jakob Friedrich
Born: August 23, 1773, Balbi, Saxony
[Died] August 10, 1843. Jena. German Neo-Kantian philosopher. Founder of the Frisian School. Influenced by the Moravian Church at a young age, he later studied mathematics, natural sciences, and philosophy, and in 1816 became a professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Jena. He was devoted to Kant and emphasized the analytical, descriptive, and methodological aspects of Kant's philosophy, and opposed the speculative and systematic idealism of his time, such as Reinhold, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel, as well as German Romanticism. Politically, he valued human dignity as a result of Kant's ideas, took a liberal stance, demanded constitutional government, advocated German unification, and actively participated in student movements. His major works include "Handbuch der praktischen Philosohie" (1818-32), "Die mathematische Naturphilosophie" (22), and "System der Metaphysik" (24).
