In medieval Japanese society, the most common method of resolving disputes was the chunin system, in which the parties to a dispute entrusted the matter to a third party (singular or plural) called a chunin (mediator), tsukushishu, ishenshu, tchiryushū, hibishū, etc., who mediated through the mediation of the third party. This chunin system was used by people of all classes, including commoners, feudal lords, and daimyo, and was applicable to civil disputes such as loans, purchases, and land disputes, criminal cases such as sword fights and murder, and even wars.
