The capital of Lam Dong Province in south-central Vietnam. It is located about 230 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, on the Lam Bien Plateau, which is part of the Central Plateau of Vietnam. It is cool because it is located at an altitude of about 1,500 m, and the average annual temperature does not exceed 20 °C. The annual precipitation is about 1,800 mm, and most of it falls from July to October when the southwest monsoon blows. Developed by France as a summer resort in the early 20th century, it became known as one of Vietnam's leading resort cities. There are beautiful lakes, hills, pine forests, and waterfalls in and around the city. The surrounding area is a major producer of highland vegetables and flowers, and the city is also a distribution center for them. There are Dalat University (1958) and the Pasteur Institute. Ethnic minorities live in the suburbs. A branch line from the main railway line connecting the capital Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City extends to the city, and a main road connects it to Ho Chi Minh City.
